Once you have a few names from the directory, a short phone call can tell you a lot. Here are questions families find most useful.
- Do you work with children my child’s age? Many providers see both adults and children.
- What are your credentials? Look for CCC-SLP (speech), OTR/L (occupational therapy), DPT or PT (physical therapy) and BCBA (ABA).
- Do you take my insurance or Medicaid? Ask about authorizations and any out-of-pocket costs.
- Is there a waitlist? If so, ask to be added while you keep looking.
- Where do sessions happen? Clinic, home, school, daycare or telehealth.
- How often, and for how long? Ask what a typical plan looks like for needs like your child’s.
- How will I be involved? Good providers coach parents to practice skills at home.
- How do you measure progress? Ask how goals are set and how often they are reviewed.
